Thyroid testing
Thyroid blood tests: understanding TSH, T3 and T4
A thyroid profile is a list of named markers, not a standard promise. Check whether your request specifies TSH, free T4 or another test.
Source-led information; no clinician review is claimed.

When two packages both say 'thyroid profile', the contents may still differ. Dubai Lab Test lists individual markers and profiles with free or total hormones. The useful comparison is the named test on your request, not which package advertises the largest number of results.
This guide helps you understand the labels and organise an enquiry in Dubai. A thyroid blood test supports clinical assessment; it does not, by itself, explain every symptom or provide a reason to change treatment.
TSH is a signal to the thyroid
Thyroid-stimulating hormone comes from the pituitary gland and tells the thyroid to make hormones. A TSH result helps assess thyroid function, but it cannot establish the cause of a problem on its own. The clinician may need other findings or tests to explain an abnormal result.

What do free T4 and total T4 mean?
T4 is a hormone made by the thyroid. A free T4 test measures the unbound portion; total T4 includes both bound and free hormone. These are different measurements, so a result and its reference range should be read under the correct test name. Do not compare free T4 directly with a total T4 value.
Is adding T3 always better?
T3 testing has a role in particular thyroid investigations, including assessment of possible overactivity. It is not commonly the main test for identifying an underactive thyroid. Adding it simply to make a panel feel more complete is not the same as a clinician deciding it answers a useful question.
- Ask whether your order specifies free or total T3.
- Do not add thyroid antibodies automatically because they sound more comprehensive.
- If the request and the available profile differ, ask for clarification before collection.
Prepare the request and your clinical context
Tell the clinician about medicines, supplements, pregnancy and any existing thyroid treatment. Do not stop or retime a medicine without instructions. Other tests collected at the same visit may require fasting even if the thyroid tests do not have that requirement.
- Keep previous thyroid reports with dates and units.
- Ask whether collection should be timed in relation to your usual treatment.
- Bring the actual prescription or request rather than a remembered panel name.
- Explain symptoms to a clinician; an enquiry team cannot diagnose their cause.

Questions before booking a thyroid profile in Dubai
For this catalogue, compare the contents of Thyroid Profile I and II rather than treating the numbers as quality grades: the listings distinguish free-hormone from total-hormone combinations. Confirm the current contents and match them to the request before agreeing to a substitution.
Ask: 'Does this option include the exact TSH and hormone markers requested? Are collection and result review included? What happens if my clinician needs a marker not in the package?' Confirm availability, total cost and the reporting window. Do not treat a package selection as a treatment decision.
- Keep the final test names on the confirmed order.
- Arrange who will interpret the report in context.
- Ask the clinician about follow-up rather than choosing a repeat-testing interval yourself.
Common questions
Is TSH the same as T3 or T4?
No. TSH is a signal from the pituitary gland, while T3 and T4 are thyroid hormones. They provide different information.
Does every thyroid profile include free T4?
Do not assume so. Profiles may use free or total hormones and may include different markers. Check the itemised list against the request.
Should everyone add a T3 test?
No. T3 is useful for particular clinical questions. Ask the ordering clinician whether it is needed rather than automatically buying a larger panel.
Should I stop thyroid medicine before testing?
Do not stop or change timing on your own. Ask the clinician for instructions that fit your medicine and the purpose of the test.
